PROBLEM
Guatemala faces some of the largest barriers in order to access sexual and reproductive rights in Latin America. The country has a strong presence of groups who oppose the exercise of sexual and reproductive rights and promote laws that restrict comprehensive sexuality education, access to contraceptives, and safe abortion. These gaps contribute to the twenty percent of annual pregnancies that occur in adolescents under the age of 19, the 2,187 girls under the age of 14 gave birth in 2022 (OSAR, 2022), and the monthly 640 women are attended for sexual violence (INACIF, 2022)
IDEA
Artivist, sociologist and Guatemalan rap singer Rebeca Lane received our support to conceptualize a new music album highlighting what these barriers mean to girls and women. The album, released in 2021 with the title “Flourish”, includes nine tracks and some musical videos, which talks about self-esteem, heartbreak, pleasure, consent, feminism political fight, menstruation and chosen motherhood.
