PROBLEM

In Latin America, millions of people face restrictions accessing sexual and reproductive services, including abortion. There’s a high need for comprehensive sexual education programs, innovative and effective communication campaigns that use the power of technology and media to their advantage to reach those who need it the most, especially teens and young adults. In general, Latin American countries don’t prioritize these matters and everyday NGOs face more and more difficulties trying to meet the growing demand. The current situation presents a great opportunity for private enterprises, specifically those with a focus on social impact. In recent years, numerous programs have emerged in the region that are dedicated to incubate or accelerate companies that pursue a triple impact: social, environment and profit. All these programs offer a variety of services to entrepreneurs in order to strengthen their business models or business plans, through mentorships, intensive training courses, linking them to investors, community development or even expanding their access to capital investors. However, none of the current programs are focused on meeting the needs of companies that seek to generate a positive impact in the health and reproductive rights of millions of people. This is due to a lack of knowledge about the market needs, the stigma around this matter or even the lack of interest from investors. Some studies estimate that the FemTech sector, which is developing services, products, tools, applications and technological devices to meet the demand for health and reproductive rights solutions, will generate over 95 millions US dollars in 2030. However Latin America is currently at the tale end of this industry

IDEA

In the year 2022 we collaborated with experienced companies in the social impact ecosystem, such as IMPAQTO from Ecuador, and ALTERNA from Guatemala. Together we designed IDEA Start, the first program created for discovering, incubating and accelerating companies focused on social impact in health and reproductive rights in Latin America.

The early phase of the program consists in training, with mentorships specialized in health and reproductive rights, business models, market fit, storytelling, innovation and capital raising. Companies who stood out in the training process, with a better understanding of their business idea with health and reproductive rights included in their goals, received seed funding, specialized technical assistance over one year, access to ecosystems of innovation and social impact, and visibility of their companies in IDEA Start events. Step by step, we are building a new ecosystem to promote social impact entrepreneurship in the health and reproductive rights sector.
